Regional Squad Update

The final practical sessions of the SportTayside & Fife Regional Squad for this season have now taken place. There had been an education evening scheduled to take place in August however this session will now take place in October. Due to the number of Championship races taking place in August it was felt that it would be difficult to get everyone together for a meaningful session.

The October session will be an opportunity for the new 2007-08 squad to get together with the coaches on a more social basis and there will also be an educational opportunity on this evening. All athletes will be sent an invitation in advance inviting them to become part of the SportTayside & Fife Squad for 2007-08.

In September we will be getting the Squad coaches, scottishathletics and personal coaches together to assess and review the squad sessions which have taken place over the last few months and provide recommendations to make any necessary improvements for the future.

TAYSIDE AND FIFE ATHLETES MEET FOR THEIR FIRST BANK OF SCOTLAND
REGIONAL SQUAD GET TOGETHER

Tuesday evening 6th February, at Pitreavie Athletics Track, Dunfermline in sub zero temperatures fourteen local sprinters and hurdlers attended the first official get together of the Bank of Scotland - Tayside & Fife Regional Squad.

Paul Allan, Tayside & Fife regional sprints coach was joined by five additional coaches enabling the group to have the specialised close attention an athlete requires. This approach meant three different sessions ran simultaneously, blocks, 200m & 400m reps.

Nigel Hetherington, scottishathletics Performance Development Manger, who was there observing the session stated: “Bringing the top regional athletes here tonight to work together under the guidance of specialist coaches is the goal of the Bank of Scotland Regional Squad format.”

Since 1999 the Bank of Scotland TYAP has been committed to developing young athletic talent across Scotland, smoothing the pathway for progress and success at International level by providing valuable technical and logistical support. This year the BoSTYA programme expanded further launching Bank of Scotland Regional Squads - Central, West, East, Tayside & Fife, Highland and Grampian, including over 300 athletes.

SportTayside & Fife Athletics Development Manager, Alasdair Donaldson added:” The Regional Squads play a vital role in the athlete development pathway. They provide the athletes with a target as they move through the age-groups, acting as a stepping stone for the National Squads and beyond. For the athletes it is a chance to get some different coaching input and the chance to train with their peers. It brings the squad together as a group providing an extra stimulus for their training particularly during the cold winter months.

Mandy Hood, Bank of Scotland Sponsorship Manager added; "We have some really promising young sprinter and hurdlers in our squad at the moment. For them to spend time with these, high calibre coaches, receiving advice on training and competing is fantastic for their development. I look forward to watching their progress over the coming months".
