Athletics in Tayside & Fife

Alasdair Donaldson took on the role of Athletics Development Manger for SportTayside & Fife on 1st February 2006. He came into post from New Balance Athletic Shoes Ltd where he worked across the North of England and Scotland as a Technical Representative for 18 months. In this role he worked with a large number of diverse partners and learnt the true value of partnership working across a number of different groups.

Before this Alasdair taught for six years. He worked predominantly as a part-time Lecturer of athletics at Loughborough University (where he had previously studied for a BSc in Geography and Physical Education & Sports Science as well as a PGCE in Physical Education with Geography). During this time he also spent three years working part-time as a teacher of basic needs in Glen Parva Young Offenders Institute in Leicester and two years as a part-time Lecturer in Sports Science at Loughborough College.

Alasdair has been involved in athletics for 20 years, mainly as an athlete. He has also now started coaching but will continue to compete. During his time as an athlete Alasdair has competed at all levels of the sport, from club competition in the “colts” age group through to International representation at all levels through to seniors, for both Scotland and Great Britain. He has competed predominantly as an 800m runner, but he has also had representative honours over 400m, 1500m and on the Cross country fields.

Role of the Athletics Development Manager

Within his role as Athletics Development Manager, Alasdair will lead the development of athletics in Tayside & Fife with a key focus on Clubs, Coaches, Volunteers, Facilities and Athletes below the Area Institute of Sport level. A strategic plan for the sport will be produced and implemented through working closely with scottishathletics, and the local stakeholders, including the clubs and the Local Athletics Partnerships, to ensure that the infrastructure of the sport develops.
